HISTORICAL PROFILE
Fighters/Fights
I heard the late Jack Hyles preach a message once where he said
(quoted from my memory) "Boxing is the most brutal sport in
America and it ought to be outlawed. But, until it is I am going
to watch every fight I possible can."
In that brutal world of professional boxing there are a few
fights that even the casual observer will long remember. These
fights have become infamous footnotes in the memory banks and
blood of countless fans and not a few non-fans. Here are a few
of the top rated fights:
§ Ali vs. Frazier, III (The Thrilla in Manila) - 1975
§ Ali vs. Foreman (The Rumble in the Jungle) - 1975
§ Leonard vs. Hagler (The Superfight) - 1987
§ Hagler vs. Hearns - 1985
§ Marciano vs. Walcott - 1952
Why is this? What is the attraction to these special fights? I
believe they each have one shared ingredient. It is the fact
that one or both of the fighters in each of these matches seemed
to be beaten. Everyone knew it but them. They refused to quit,
throw in the towel. They answered the bell when it seemed
hopeless and fought on. Sometimes winning and sometimes not, but
always inspiring those of us who also have overwhelming battles
to fight in our everyday life.
These fights I elude to inspire
us to get up and keep fighting.
I see it everyday in men, women, teens, and even children. I see
it when employment is lost, doctors' diagnosis is bleak, and
life takes a twisted turn. I see them get up with nothing left
but their faith and they fight on. They are the true heroes!
SCRIPTURE
2Timothy 4:7
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my
course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for
me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous
judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto
all them also that love his appearing.
"To all who seem to be pressed above measure - keep fighting!"
